Profiles

For the profile assignment we were expected to interview a single person
for a allotted time frame. I knew from the get-go that I wanted to interview a
returnee (person who went to school overseas and then come back to Japan)
for this.

Doc Challenge

Doc Challenge is a competition held across the globe in which
people create a documentary in 4 days.

Our group (through mind numbing amount of telephone calls)
decided to go with interviewing a dominatrix for this documentary.

The doc challenge already a unique experience, I had no idea what I was
going to go through...

The first day was the busiest. Trying to get everything ready was a nightmare
because of the difficulty in trying to find a place to shoot a dominatrix.
We ended up shooting at one of our classmates apartments near school
and took her there.

When shooting started it was just like any other interview (except for the
fact that our interviewee was wearing very tight leather). As we asked
questions we dug deeper and deeper into the world of S&M she was
living in and I was becoming more and more uncomfortable...

The demonstration she showed us was pretty bad as well, it didn't
help that it was done on some one I knew.

The second day we first went to Shibuya for B-roll.
Then the third day we headed to our leaders house for intense editing.
It was very difficult just to put the Japanese into English because
there were different nuances.

In the end I believe we did a very good job and everyone worked
to their utmost potential. From this I also learned that somethings
I will never be able to quite understand.

Tokyo Digital Postcard

This project was a hassle for me because I had a hard time finding a person
that was willing to be interviewed. It took me until the last minute to actually
have people comply to the interview.

It was a few days before the deadline for this assignment and I finally got the
interview that I was looking for. Right in front of Koganei station there was a man
selling tofu out of a cart. I thought it would be an interesting subject to interview
so I decided to ask a few questions about the job and what is like working as a
tofu salesman.

After I interviewed the first man he introduced me to another tofu salesman
who's dream was to become a comedian someday in Japan.

Process

Because I took the "Tokyo Stories" course last semester I was given the assignment to create a "process" video. Throwing around a bunch of ideas and coming to the realization that I wasn't talented in anything I turned to origami. No, origami is not very interesting, but it was the only thing I could do on camera that I could think of that was a sort of "process".

I edited the video so it's not 10minutes of me folding paper, to a quick 1 minute video with diegetic background sound. To emphasize the speed of the process I chose to use the famous "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
